3 Simple Ways to Connect with Your Kids
There are moments in motherhood when the world feels heavier than we know how to carry.
Maybe you’ve lived through one of those weeks - where tragedy strikes close to home, where the news feels too much, or where the ache of what you can’t control feels especially tender.
In the quiet shadow of those moments, many of us instinctively reach for our children.
Not always physically but emotionally. Spiritually.
We want to gather them close. To anchor them in peace.
To remind them (and ourselves) that love is still here, and God is still near.
But in the swirl of emotion, it can feel hard to know how to connect.
Especially when the routines feel off, the schedules are full, or everyone is tired.
What I’ve learned is this:
Connection doesn’t require something elaborate.
Sometimes, it’s the simplest rhythms that speak the loudest.
Here are 3 ways to weave connection into the ordinary moments of your day:
Share “High, Low, Buffalo” at Dinner
It’s exactly what it sounds like:
A high from the day
A low from the day
And a buffalo - something run or silly that happened
This practice gives your children language to reflect, and it gives you a precious glimpse into their world without feeling like a forced conversation.
It’s a rhythm of naming what’s real.
And that simple naming builds trust.
Ask “Where Did You See God Today?”
This one is soft and open. It doesn’t demand a theological answer.
Some nights, you may get a blank stare.
Other nights, they may surprise you.
But over time, it invites them to look for the sacred in the ordinary.
And that’s a habit worth planting.
Speak a Bedtime Blessing
Before turning out the lights, speak a few quiet words of truth over them.
It can be simple:
“May you sleep peacefully tonight, and know how much you are loved by us and the Lord”
Or a Scripture:
“The Lord is with you. He is mighty to save.”
You don’t need fancy words. Just your voice and presence.
A blessing spoken in love is never wasted.
These little moments don’t fix the world.
But they remind our children (and us) that we’re not walking through it alone.
So if this week has felt heavy…
If your heart is aching for connection…
Try one of these small rhythms tonight.
Not as one more thing to check off but as a sacred pause in the middle of a very real life.
What would it look like to try one of these on in your home?
Be encouraged: your quiet presence is enough.
