What It Really Means to Follow Jesus in Everyday Life

Most conversations about faith eventually turn to habits.

Read your Bible.
Pray regularly.
Go to church.
Be in community.

These are good and life-giving rhythms. But beneath every habit is something deeper.

A posture.

Because habits alone don’t form us.
What forms us is who we are becoming and who we are walking with along the way.

This is why Scripture uses the language of apprenticeship.

In the New Testament, the word disciple comes from the Hebrew idea of a talmid - an apprentice. Not simply someone who believes something, but someone who orders their life around being with their teacher, learning from them, and gradually becoming like them.

The goal was never information.

It was transformation.

Not checking spiritual boxes, but living in close relationship with Jesus.

And that begins, not with doing more, but with paying attention.

Why Habits Alone Don’t Change Us

It’s possible to practice spiritual habits while still living from a posture of self-reliance.

You can read Scripture but still carry anxiety.
You can pray but still feel pressure to control outcomes.
You can go through the motions while your inner life remains unchanged.

Not because you’re doing anything wrong.

But because habits without relational posture become routine instead of formation.

Dallas Willard once wrote:

“The greatest issue facing the world today… is whether those who are identified as Christians will become disciples - students, apprentices, practitioners of Jesus Christ - steadily learning from Him how to live the life of the kingdom of heaven into every corner of human existence.”

This is the invitation.

Not just to believe in Jesus.
But to learn how to live with Him.

To bring Him into the ordinary fabric of your everyday life.

Where Posture Quietly Shapes Your Home

For many women, the home is where habits feel the most visible.

It’s where decisions are constant.
How you respond when your child interrupts you for the fifth time.
How you move through a slow morning.
How you carry the invisible weight of responsibility.

And it’s easy - even with the best intentions to move through these moments relying entirely on yourself.

Your own logic.
Your own urgency.
Your own strength.

Not because you don’t love Jesus.

But because you forget He’s present in the middle of the ordinary.

Apprenticeship isn’t formed in grand spiritual moments.

It’s formed in the quiet, unseen ones.

When you pause instead of reacting.
When you release the pressure to manage everything perfectly.
When you remember you don’t have to carry the weight of your home alone.

This is what it means to follow Him.

Not perfectly.
But attentively.

Following Jesus Reshapes How You Live

Following Jesus isn’t just something that happens during prayer or quiet time.

It happens while making breakfast.
While folding laundry.
While deciding how to respond when you feel overwhelmed.

Because apprenticeship is less about what you do occasionally and more about who you walk with consistently.

Over time, this posture begins to change how you move through your life.

You feel less pressure to force outcomes.
Less urgency to control everything.
Less alone in the responsibility you carry.

Not because your circumstances suddenly change.

But because you are no longer carrying them by yourself.

You are learning to live alongside Him.

And that changes everything.

What This Could Look Like For You

Following Jesus rarely begins with dramatic change.

More often, it begins with small moments of awareness.

Moments when you pause instead of pushing through.
Moments when you remember He is present, even in the ordinary.
Moments when you release the pressure to manage everything on your own.

Over time, these small shifts begin to reshape how you live.

Not because you’ve mastered a set of habits.

But because you are learning to live from a different posture.

A posture of walking with Him.

And from that posture, new rhythms naturally begin to take root.

And alignment always begins with noticing.
